Baby Skin Care: Sun Protection for Baby

Baby skin care is important year round, but especially in the summer.  The hot July sun can be a blast, but it’s our job as moms to protect our little ones from too much of a good thing.

Sun Protection

Leading Lady BreastfeedingThe first rule of baby skin care during the heat of the summer is applying sun block, of course.  Look for sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection of at least SPF 30 or above.  No tear, natural sunscreens are best for baby’s delicate skin, and try to find a water proof or very water resistant lotion.  Be sure to apply sunscreen anytime your baby will be in the sun longer than 5 minutes.  It takes very little time for that soft, sweet skin to get burnt.

SPF clothing is a great choice, especially for the beach or pool.  Wearing a swim shirt and hat with SPF protection will further protect your baby from the damaging rays of the sun.  Not only will it provide shade and coverage, but this special fabric treatment makes it less penetrable by the sun.

Find shade whenever possible.  If you’re sitting by the pool or at the beach, find an umbrella or bring a tent so baby can be out of the direct sunlight for awhile.

Heat Protection

Your baby or toddler’s short attention span may come in handy in the summer because you don’t want to stay outdoors too long in extreme heat.  Babies especially have trouble stabilizing their own body temperature and can get over-heated quite easily.  If you see flushed cheeks and sweat, it’s time to go inside to avoid heat rash.  Also, pay attention to the air quality index.  Spending any time outdoors may not be recommended on certain days.

Leading Lady Square Neck Nursing CamiMake sure you and baby stay hydrated!  This may mean a little extra nursing to make sure baby is getting enough liquid.  Be prepared on the go in one of our stylish and functional nursing tanks, or use our nursing chemise as a bathing suit cover-up. Right now you can take advantage of our Hot Summer Sale!  You’ll receive 40% off one bra when you buy two or more bras at regular price.

If your baby does get a slight sunburn or heat rash, call your pediatrician for a recommendation.  He will likely suggest an over-the-counter or prescription healing ointment and staying out of the sun for several days.

We hope you have fun in the sun this summer and make use of our baby skin care tips!
