I have read that breastfeeding isn’t supposed to hurt. My baby is almost 2 weeks old and I still cringe when I latch him on. Is this normal?
While it may be common for your nipples to be sensitive the first few weeks of nursing, they shouldn’t be sore. Cracking, bleeding, blisters or bruising of nipples is not considered normal with breastfeeding. If you haven’t done so already, you may want to make an appointment with a certified lactation consultant or get in contact with LaLeche League. The baby may not be latching deep enough. Some lactation consultants work closely with occupational therapists who are trained in working with infant suck. After one or two visits your baby should be on track for a comfortable breastfeeding experience for both of you!
