The Most Common Poisons for Babies

As parents we are always on alert to ensure the safety of our babies.  It’s part of the job.  Knowing where dangers lurk is especially important when it comes to the most common poisons for babies. According to poison.org, approximately half of poison exposures are among children six and under and 99% of them were accidental.

Today we’re taking a look at the most common poisons for babies so you can take measures to keep your baby safe.

Knowing where dangers lurk is especially important when it comes to the most common poisons for babies.

Cleaning Supplies

From dishwashing and laundry detergents, to bathroom tile cleaners and rust removers, cleaning supplies are extremely toxic to babies.  Unfortunately many of them come in brightly colored bottles that may look appetizing to your tot.  Cleaning supplies are not only dangerous when ingested, but many of them also cause burns when exposed to a baby’s delicate skin.

Medications and Vitamins

While you would never intentionally give an adult medication or supplement to your baby, she may come across them and help herself.  And chances are, she won’t just take one.  Cold, cough and sinus medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, pain killers and iron supplements are among the most dangerous to children.

Personal Care Items

You may not realize how toxic your personal care items, including cosmetics, may be to your baby.  Of course you would never take a bite out of your lipstick or drink hair dye, but your baby might.  Nail products such as nail polish remover and nail glue top the list of the most harmful personal care items.

Plants and Pesticides

Your houseplants may brighten your home but they may also look delicious to a baby who experiences the world through her mouth.  While natural, inedible plants can be hazardous for anyone to consume much less a baby whose body is still developing.  Also, pesticides that you may use on indoor or outdoor plants (or that may have been used prior to your purchase of them) can be worse than ingesting the plant itself.  Of course some plants are inherently poisonous, such as wild mushrooms and poison ivy or oak.

Alcohol

This is a no-brainer that babies should not drink alcohol.  This intoxicant can stunt development in major ways.  That’s why doctors caution mothers against drinking during pregnancy and drinking in moderation while breastfeeding is a must.

Hydrocarbons and Antifreeze

If a product smells bad, it probably is bad for your baby.  Hydrocarbons including gasoline, paint thinner, lighter fluid, and furniture polish have a toxic scent for a reason.  Antifreeze may be odorless but just as dangerous.

Other Toxic Products

If you’re worried about your baby chocking on small items she may find on the floor, you should be just as worried if she is able to swallow them.  Plastic toys, coins, button batteries and items with lead paint are very dangerous to babies.

Keep your little loves safe from the most common poisons for babies by securely locking cabinets, even those that you believe are hard-to-reach.  Also, supervise your baby at all times to ensure she doesn’t come across anything that would be poisonous to her precious body.
