A WIC Breastfeeding Success Story from the Osage Nation Tribe

A WIC Success Story for the Osage Nation TribeShelby’s WIC experience began in June 2011 when she enrolled as a pregnant participant. She was given breastfeeding information but had never seriously considered it.  During a routine benefit pick-up, Shelby was approached by Donna Patterson, the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator. The two of them began chatting and Donna encouraged Shelby to attend a breastfeeding class.

In December of 2011, Shelby began working for the WIC Program through TANF’s job education program. Shelby assisted the Breastfeeding Coordinator and became more interested in learning about the benefits of breastfeeding.

Shelby gave birth to her daughter, Jenny, on February 16, 2012. With guidance from the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, Shelby became a successful breastfeeding mother.

During the summer of 2012, Shelby was hired as a Peer Counselor for the Osage Nation WIC Program. She proved to be a great peer counselor who was outgoing and enthusiastic about providing breastfeeding education. She earned her CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) license while employed by WIC. Shelby decided to further her education and enrolled in LPN school in December 2013. She was a full time student from January 2014 through December 2014. After earning her LPN license, Shelby returned to work as a Peer Counselor at Osage Nation WIC. She is looking forward to sitting for her IBCLC in March 2016.

Shelby has a passion for breastfeeding and women’s health and has helped many mothers achieve their goal as well.  Shelby never imagined that a routine visit to her local WIC clinic would help her find her passion and direct her towards a fulfilling career.

“I feel an obligation to help mothers make an informed decision on what’s best for them and their babies. I love what I do!”
