Full Figure Women Represent at Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is well underway and full figure women are representing this year!  From bustier tops to business suits, full figure models are strutting down the most prestigious streets of New York, the fashion runways.

In years past, when a designer slated a full figure model or two in his show, it would make a media splash.  The statement being that the designer took a risk showing a plus size woman wearing his couture.  But this year, full figure models are included in many runway shows – from exclusive full figure brands, to styles meant for every body – and there is actually very little media attention.  The lack of ink proves that showing a range of women on the runway is not and should not be out of the ordinary.  Rather, it is representative of the women we are and we see every day.  Where people are noticing is on social media; Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are ablaze with applause and gratitude for showing women of all sizes on the runway.

Full Figure Women Represent at Fashion WeekWhile many of the top designers have not yet followed suit, several up-and-coming designers understand the importance of showing their clothes and accessories are meant for everyone, of any size, color or walk of life.  That means curvy women, flat-chested women, mothers, you name it.  And now they are showing up on the runway.  Plus size fashion is a huge industry, especially among a younger population of fashionistas, and smart designers are capitalizing on that.

Also noteworthy, some exclusive full figure designers such as Betty Jean Couture have shows during New York Fashion Week.  While there is a separate fashion week earlier in the year dedicated to full figure fashion, many designers find it important to bring their lines to the main stage with other universal brands.  It’s about showing women that high fashion does come in their size, even if that is a plus size, and leveling the playing field for all women.

And full figure women are representing all over New York this month.  Uptown Fashion Week begins just as “downtown” Fashion Week is winding down.  It’s an alternative high fashion event for “emerging, established and celebrity designers.”  This year, Uptown Fashion Week will be featuring a slew of full figure models.  Last week the event organizers held a casting call specific to plus size models.  Their goal is to make fashion accessible to everyone by showing a variety of body types on their runway.

We are thrilled to see designers representing diverse women who are interested in fashion.  It only makes sense that full figure models walk the runway because full figure women are shopping for high fashion clothes and accessories on Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive and the corridors of malls across America every day.  There are four more days of Fashion Week and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the event has in store!
