8 Ways to Get 8 Cups a Day

Water is a basic human need that keeps our bodies functioning properly.  From head-to-toe, our bodies contain of 50-65% water, depending on individual body mass and make up.  Part of keeping our hydration in balance is ensuring we get at least eight 8 oz. servings of water a day.

Do you have trouble get your 8 cups a day?  You’re not alone.  Today we’re sharing 8 ways to get 8 cups a day:

8 Ways to Get 8 Cups a DayCitrus Twist:  Squirting some fresh citrus fruits into your glass gives your water a tangy twist while also adding some essential Vitamin C.  Lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines and grapefruits are all refreshing ways to enjoy your water.

Berry Infusion:  For a boost of sweetness, soak berries in a pitcher of water for a few hours before drinking it.  The natural sugars will infuse with your H2O for a delicious sweet treat.  Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries will enhance the taste and appearance of your water during a BBQ or cocktail party.  These bright berries add beauty and pizzazz, not to mention a dose of antioxidants.

Flavored Powder:  If you’re on the go and need to flavor your water bottle, try adding flavor powder.  These now come in individual servings and pack in some vitamins, minerals and antioxidants along with a tasty flavor.  Just be sure to find low-calorie versions without chemicals or unnatural food coloring.

Sparkling Water:  Getting sick of still water?  Try a sparkling variety.  These cost a little more than bottled water (and a lot more than tap water) but one a day to break up the monotony may be well worth the expense.  Be sure to select a zero calorie option with natural flavoring.

Water-Based Produce:  Most fruits and vegetables have high water content plus they have essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients too.  Fruits with the highest water content include watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, oranges and pineapple.  Veggies that will keep you hydrated include cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, celery and zucchini.  If you eat a diet rich and hydrating fruits and vegetables, you can cross off one cup of water a day.

Water-Based Preparation:  The basis of soups, stews and hot cereals like oatmeal, grits and cream of wheat is water.  So don’t forget to count these as part of your water intake.  Eating your water is a great way to reach your 8 cups, and tasty one too.

Herbal Teas:  The myth that teas are dehydrating is simply not true.  The hydration factor outweighs any elements that may be dehydrating because teas are made primarily of water.  Drinking hot tea is another way to diversify your water intake so you don’t get bored with plain old water.  And there are endless herbal tea varieties that have a range of benefits beyond just hydration.

Set Goals:  If you make drinking water a fun part of your day, you’re more likely to reach your 8 cups.  One way to do this is to have a water routine.  For example, one glass as soon as you wake up, a glass with each meal, two glasses after exercise, etc…  You can also challenge yourself to reach water goals by certain times of day.  For instance, you can say, I’m going to have at least 4 glasses by noon.  Keep a mental tally so you know where you stand and how much further you have to go to reach your water goal every day.

Cheers x 8 to your best health and wellness!
