I am 5 months pregnant with twins. Is there anything special I need to do to prepare to breastfeed them?
Congratulations! I have known many women who have successfully breastfed twins. The key is patience and determination, especially in the early weeks. As with any new baby, your two bundles of joy may take a few days to get the hang of latching. Once they are nursing well, I encourage tandem nursing. By feeding them at the same time you will cut down on how long feeding time takes.
In terms of preparation, you may want to look into recruiting some help in the first weeks you are home. While twins are twice as much fun, they’re also twice as much work! Having an extra set of hands for diaper changing, housework and laundry can give you the extra time to nurse your babies. And just maybe, with some luck, you’ll even get a little bit of sleep, which is not only important for your physical and mental health, but also for nursing.
