I am currently breastfeeding my 4 month old daughter and planning on going on an overnight trip. How often should I pump and how should I store the milk?
Whenever you rely exclusively on a pump, make sure you will have access to an outlet and if your pump operates with batteries make sure you take a full supply with you when you travel. If your pump is only AC adaptable I would recommend also packing a hand pump. This will ensure that if an outlet isn’t available that you will still be able to pump. While away from your baby, try to pump as closely to her feeding times as possible but at least every 3 to 4 hours.
Pumped breastmilk is good for up to 8 days when refrigerated. You may want to pack a cooler with ice if you are driving or check-in a cooler of dry ice if you are flying. Make sure that you keep the ice from melting to ensure that the milk doesn’t spoil.
