I am nursing a 14 month old three to four times a day. I just found out I am pregnant. Some of my friends told me that I need to stop breastfeeding right away.
Congratulations! I am sure you are both excited and a little nervous. Let
me put your mind at ease when it comes to breastfeeding. As long as your
pregnancy isn’t considered “high risk” then there is no reason that you
can’t continue to breastfeed your toddler for as long as you both want.
You may notice that your nipples may be a bit more sensitive, especially in
the first trimester. This is common. You may also notice a decrease in
your milk supply when you get closer to your second trimester. This is
due to the increase in hormones that are going to support your pregnancy.
Typically toddlers at 14 months of age are getting the majority of their
nourishment from foods other than breastmilk. As long as breastmilk is not
your toddlers only food source, the decrease in supply should be okay.
Many toddlers will wean themselves when they notice a change in supply.
Some toddlers will continue to nurse through the entire pregnancy and
possibly once the baby is born. This is called tandem nursing. Remember
that however long you decide to continue to nurse your toddler is up to
