Breastfeeding Success Story: Sakala from Lyon County, KS WIC

“‘If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying.’ I have told myself this a hundred no, a MILLION times while going through my breastfeeding journey.

I never thought at the age of 19 I’d be pregnant and then give birth at the age of 20. I knew as soon as I was pregnant I was going to breastfeed but I never knew the truth to it.

Breastfeeding Success Story: Sakala from Lyon County, KS WICI gave birth to my one and only son Ellis, on September 15th 2015 via emergency C-section which caused my milk to come in slow. As soon as I got a hold of my son he latched on and each time he was wanting to nurse I nursed on demand.

Ellis was losing weight in the hospital and it was because my milk hadn’t come in yet so we had to do some substitutions. When I got home I was advised to nurse on demand and then give my son 3-4 oz of formula because he wasn’t getting enough to eat from me. This broke my heart. I also never knew your nipples could hurt so bad. I cried for the first few months because it hurt so much.

I knew that I could be successful but I had to find the resources. I located 2 wonderful breastfeeding clinics in Emporia KS that met weekly with a lactation consultant. Once I went to the clinic at Flinthills Community Health Center I really started progressing. My son was getting weighed and he was gaining weight great so I stopped supplementing with formula. I had to stop going to the clinics once I started going back to work but it helped me with our journey.

My son will be 2 in September and he is still breastfeeding!!!! I am so beyond grateful for the support and help we have gotten. The picture is first latch and then a few days ago.”
