I’m breastfeeding my new daughter, and we will be traveling this holiday season. What do I need to do to make it less stressful on us both?

Traveling while breastfeeding can be challenging for a new mom, but with a little preparation it can be an easy ride! The good news is that breastfeeding is so much easier when traveling with an infant than bottle-feeding. You don’t have to worry about carrying around a day’s worth of bottles, formula or finding warm water!

If you are FLYING this year, take a moment to review the TSA Traveling with Children tips at www.tsa.gov to help make your passage through airport security as easy as possible. Expressed breast milk is allowed in reasonable quantities and not required to be in a zip-top bag, but you have to declare this at inspection, so give yourself extra time. Breastfeed while the plane takes off and as it lands. This will help to eliminate the uncomfortable cabin pressure changes in your baby’s ears and help him/her relax.

If you are DRIVING, have water easily accessible to you as well as healthy snacks like fruit and granola bars. And allow extra time for stops to care for the baby and to nurse.

The more prepared you are, the less stress you will have during your travel!
