Breast Reduction and Breastfeeding: I had a breast reduction a few years ago. Will I be able to breastfeed?

Breastfeeding with Leading LadyI often get asked questions about breast reduction and breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding after a breast reduction is possible but there are many things to consider.  More extensive surgeries and the position of the incision will influence how much milk you may be able to produce.  I strongly encourage you to seek advice from a lactation consultant before you deliver or during your hospital stay.

If you are worried about the health of your baby, keep a close eye on your baby’s weight in her early weeks to ensure she’s getting enough milk.  Your lactation consultant can then help you determine if and how you need to supplement.  Even if you do need to supplement, there are devices that can help your baby get milk from your breast.

Be sure your breasts are supported with nursing bras that fit properly.  Whether you are looking for an everyday t-shirt nursing bra, a leisure bra or a sport nursing bra, use our bra size calculator to find your fit.

Having had a breast reduction and breastfeeding may be a bit more challenging, but it will be worth the effort!  Remember, even partial breast milk is better than no breast milk.  Good Luck!
